Over the past few decades Alessandro Portelli has brought a multidimensional approach to the study and understanding of oral history. Through his books The Death of Luigi Trastullia and Other Stories, The Battle of Valle Giulia, and The Order Has Been Carried Out, and a prolific output of journal articles, Portelli has profoundly changed the way oral historians interpret narrative. Introducing a more folkloric approach to oral history, Portelli has historians thinking about genre and narrative as verbal art. He has enhanced their understanding of oral history as something beyond just the narration about the past so that historians are thinking of oral history as an expression of culture, memory, identity, and individual and collective meaning.
Portelli’s most recent book, They Say in Harlan County: An Oral History, is based on more than thirty years of interviews and research on Harlan County, Kentucky. Portelli conducted more than 150 interviews with men and women from Harlan County, who tell their stories. Very interested in class struggle and heavily influenced by Appalachian folk music, Portelli was drawn to this county early on and has, subsequently, spent extensive time with residents of Harlan.
The book begins with a reflection on his relationship with the region, his early tour guides of the county, and his earliest impressions. Together, Portelli and his informants explore the history and culture of Harlan County, examining themes of hardship, conflict, religion, art, and love as well as exploring labor struggles, outmigration, and race. Of course, the role of the coal industry is continuously weighed throughout the book as his informants discuss Harlan County’s dependence on the mining industry. Portelli‘s narrators do explore the complexities of mountaintop removal, a divisive issue currently gripping the region. Although the research was conducted prior to the current methamphetamine epidemic, Portelli additionally examines the newer dependencies plaguing the Appalachian region, the epidemic of drug addiction and its devastating consequences.
They Say in Harlan County is a place-based ethnographic oral history that celebrates the interplay of narrative, history, music, poetry, and art. The emerging narrative offers a more comprehensive, cohesive, and, therefore, more relevant narrative clearly articulating the themes of poverty, pride, resistance, and, ultimately, survival. They Say in Harlan County effectively navigates meaning throughout this rich work, and many of the people interviewed prove remarkable storytellers, writers, artists, and poets. One of the most important components of this work is the fact that Portelli is not the typical Appalachian scholar. A professor of English literature at the University of Rome in Rome, Italy, Portelli came to Harlan County, Kentucky, with a rich accent of his own. An outsider not only to Harlan County and the Appalachian region, but also to Kentucky and the United States, Portelli came to Harlan County asking questions and building relationships. He regularly returned to Harlan County over the next thirty years to ask more questions, to meet new friends, and to reconnect with lifelong friends. The trust built up between Portelli and his informants plays a critical role in the overall effectiveness of these interviews and this book; clearly, the residents hold Alessandro Portelli in high regard, revealing incredibly personal details and cultural information. CAMILLO DE CARLO, PRIMO "007" DELLA STORIA D'ITALIA, RICORDATO IN UN CONVEGNO

Camillo De Carlo, primo "007" della storia d'Italia, sarà ricordato il prossimo 9 aprile a Vittorio Veneto con un importante convegno presso il teatro Lorenzo Da Ponte (a partire dalle ore 10.00, ingresso libero), dal titolo "Un mito tra realtà e fantasia". De Carlo nacque a Venezia il 6 aprile 1892 da madre di origine ebrea e da padre nativo di Calalzo. Fu protagonista di una memorabile impresa nella Grande Guerra che segnò il destino dell’Italia e per questo gli fu conferita la medaglia d’oro. Medaglia d’argento della Guerra di Spagna, Podestà di Vittorio Veneto, Patriota, agente segreto, viveur, il De Carlo attraversò l’intero novecento italiano, vestendone con coerenza le continue contraddizioni ed i miti di un’estetica “dannunziana”. Operò in medio oriente ed in Asia, distinguendosi per le sue capacità di uomo di intelligence. Durante i suoi viaggi raccolse oggetti rari e preziosi che conservò nel Palazzo Minucci a Vittorio Veneto, dove visse e ospitò personaggi famosi come Giovanni Comisso, Italo Svevo, Olga Villi. La collezione di giade, esposte a Palazzo Minucci, è tra le più prestigiose d’Europa insieme agli arazzi, dipinti e suppellettili d’oro e d’ argento. Il Palazzo e l’intera collezione sono stati donati alla città di Vittorio Veneto e sono gestiti dalla Fondazione Minuccio Minucci. Morì a Vittorio Veneto il 29 marzo 1968. Lasciò scritto: “Desidererei, se fosse possibile, essere sepolto in un’arca nel sagrato attiguo alla chiesa degli alpini di Calalzo”.

Il Convegno del 9 aprile prevede dalle ore 10 il saluto delle autorità, quindi interventi della dottoressa Maria Grazia Gottardi, presidente degli Amici di Vittorio Veneto (associazione organizzatrice del convegno con la collaborazione della Città di Vittorio Veneto), del colonnello cavalier Lorenzo Cadeddu, del prof. Stefano Ancillotto, dell'assessore vittoriese alla cultura Michele De Bertolis, del prof. Aldo Toffoli. Gli interventi musicali saranno del Coro Alpino "Col di Lana". Dal pomeriggio di sabato 9 a domenica 10 aprile sarà possibile visitare Palazzo Minucci e la collezione De Carlo (prenotazioni obbligatorie al 3476428685). Oggi vorrei parlare di Francesca Caputo. Aveva diciassette anni. Morì cento anni fa, in un giorno di marzo del 1911, asfissiata o bruciata, insieme con altre 145 donne, nell'incendio di una fabbrica, la Triangle Shirtwaist Factory, a New York, Stati Uniti d'America. Donna, operaia, immigrata - tre volte senza diritti. Anzi, quattro: era anche minorenne.

Vorrei parlare di lei, ma questo è tutto quello che so: il nome, l'età, dove lavorava, dove abitava (81, Degraw Street, Brooklyn), dove e quando è morta. Ma basta a commuovere e a fare rabbia, perché ci dà i contorni di una vita, e così ci ricorda una cosa elementare che però dimentichiamo spesso di fronte alle tragedie di massa. Ma non confondo le buone intenzioni con la realtà, anche alle luce delle misere risposte ai periodici appelli all’autoregolamentazione delle liste.
In una situazione del genere, i partiti – soprattutto se privi di strumenti di controllo da parte della base – non possono essere gli unici depositari delle indicazioni delle elettrici e degli elettori. Perché, se è vero che il voto di preferenza è denso di insidie, il voto ad una lista bloccata può essere anche peggio, molto peggio. I partiti facciano la loro parte per vigilare sulla questione morale interna e l’immagine che danno all’esterno; per il resto ci sono le leggi vigenti dello Stato in materia di contrasto al condizionamento criminale del voto e, non ultimo, il diritto-dovere dei cittadini di decidere secondo coscienza.
