Over the past few decades Alessandro Portelli has brought a multidimensional approach to the study and understanding of oral history. Through his books The Death of Luigi Trastullia and Other Stories, The Battle of Valle Giulia, and The Order Has Been Carried Out, and a prolific output of journal articles, Portelli has profoundly changed the way oral historians interpret narrative. Introducing a more folkloric approach to oral history, Portelli has historians thinking about genre and narrative as verbal art. He has enhanced their understanding of oral history as something beyond just the narration about the past so that historians are thinking of oral history as an expression of culture, memory, identity, and individual and collective meaning.
Portelli’s most recent book, They Say in Harlan County: An Oral History, is based on more than thirty years of interviews and research on Harlan County, Kentucky. Portelli conducted more than 150 interviews with men and women from Harlan County, who tell their stories. Very interested in class struggle and heavily influenced by Appalachian folk music, Portelli was drawn to this county early on and has, subsequently, spent extensive time with residents of Harlan.
The book begins with a reflection on his relationship with the region, his early tour guides of the county, and his earliest impressions. Together, Portelli and his informants explore the history and culture of Harlan County, examining themes of hardship, conflict, religion, art, and love as well as exploring labor struggles, outmigration, and race. Of course, the role of the coal industry is continuously weighed throughout the book as his informants discuss Harlan County’s dependence on the mining industry. Portelli‘s narrators do explore the complexities of mountaintop removal, a divisive issue currently gripping the region. Although the research was conducted prior to the current methamphetamine epidemic, Portelli additionally examines the newer dependencies plaguing the Appalachian region, the epidemic of drug addiction and its devastating consequences.
They Say in Harlan County is a place-based ethnographic oral history that celebrates the interplay of narrative, history, music, poetry, and art. The emerging narrative offers a more comprehensive, cohesive, and, therefore, more relevant narrative clearly articulating the themes of poverty, pride, resistance, and, ultimately, survival. They Say in Harlan County effectively navigates meaning throughout this rich work, and many of the people interviewed prove remarkable storytellers, writers, artists, and poets. One of the most important components of this work is the fact that Portelli is not the typical Appalachian scholar. A professor of English literature at the University of Rome in Rome, Italy, Portelli came to Harlan County, Kentucky, with a rich accent of his own. An outsider not only to Harlan County and the Appalachian region, but also to Kentucky and the United States, Portelli came to Harlan County asking questions and building relationships. He regularly returned to Harlan County over the next thirty years to ask more questions, to meet new friends, and to reconnect with lifelong friends. The trust built up between Portelli and his informants plays a critical role in the overall effectiveness of these interviews and this book; clearly, the residents hold Alessandro Portelli in high regard, revealing incredibly personal details and cultural information. Portelli returns the favor in the publication of this masterful book

CALALZO CELEBRA I 150 ANNI DELL’ITALIA UNITA. I BAMBINI TENGANO VIVA LA FIAMMA DI QUEGLI IDEALI ADATTANDOLI AD UN MONDO IN CONTINUA EVOLUZIONE

Calalzo celebrates the unification of Italy through music by combining the different "souls" of Cadore, from adults to children. Wednesday, March 16 at 21.00 in the parish church of San Biagio di Cadore and a concert by the Choir of the Primary School will celebrate the 150th since the proclamation of the unity of the country, in a ceremony open to all citizens. The evening will begin with the greetings of the Mayor and will be conducted by journalist Donald Boldo. Focus on children who, like municipal employees during office hours wearing the tricolor cockade, "because they are - the mayor said Carlo De Luca - to represent our future. They must deliver democratic means to work on a more balanced society without the fear of change. If those who came before us had had, we would still be in caves or under Austria. The dominant theme of the evening will be the flag, "which brings together the ideals of those who gave their lives in these 150 years for a dream that was called Italy. Today, new generations are called to keep the flame of those ideally suited to the new company and to the changed conditions. "

“NORDIC WALKING IN TOUR”, CALALZO AL CENTRO DELLE DUE TAPPE: IL CADORE SI UNISCE PER LA PROMOZIONE TERRITORIALE

"Nordic walking tour," Calalzo there.
Dare in questo modo una immagine comprensoriale del ‘pacchetto Cadore 'is the mentality that we must seek, as is the case for the paths of snowshoes. That this is realized through the now-popular Nordic walking is even more significant, since Calalzo and other municipalities in the network 'VenetoTopWalk' which has local instructors and certainly offers an opportunity to non-sport of 'slow tourism' suitable for a very large target visitors. "
"For that two days - said the mayor calaltino - we were like super willing to accommodate the arrival of the first stage as the start of the second the next day, and we are already working for organize together with all the other municipalities involved an afternoon of entertainment and promoting the area, involving not only the athletes and amateurs but by expanding opportunities for their families.

The water belongs to the people and do not touch!

On the subject of public water clear for some time we decided which side to take. In these days we are being concerned and disgusted with the arrogance of Sorical, which is depriving us of a primary good such as water.

can not be silent, however, that the President of the Region Scopelliti, leader of the PDL of Calabria, the very day when our town was shamefully humiliated and deprived of a primary, declared in a press conference its unconditional support for Sorical ed alla Veolia.

C'è una struggente canzone di Utah Phillips, the great anarchist folk singer who died a few years ago, which tells another massacre, twenty-six migrant workers buried unnamed in a mass grave in Yuba City, California, in the '60s: "If I had a list, if only they knew, you sing their names one by one, and arrived at the end sung them again. " The rituals and enjoy the most effective and poignant of our time - the commemoration of 11 September that the Ardeatine, until the Washington monument to the fallen Americans in Vietnam are finally bare lists of names.

The names of the victims of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory we know them, and now they finally puts together a list, with age, even addresses. With Frank Vincent Caputo died Billot, who had 16 years, Michelina and rope, which was 25 and lived in Bleecker Street, Greenwich at that time Villae ghetto neighborhood of immigrants and the future of artists in other times where he would go to live Bob Dylan, and Annie Abbot, sixteen years too - the same age as Tillie Kupferschmidt. They died with their Daisy Lopez Fitze, Nettie Leibowitz, Betty and Frances Pork (18 and 21 years), Catherine, Anna Lucia and Maltese (39, 20, 14: mother and daughter?), Rosie Makowski, Sadie Nussbaum (18 years, even her), Providence Panno, who had 43, and Antoinette Pasqualicchio, sixteen, and Golda Schpunt, Jenie Stiglitz, Clotilde Newfoundland, Frieda Velakovski ... There was even some man: Theodore Rotten, Israel Rosen (17 years). Italian names, some names Hispanic (Loped, Del Castillo), especially Hebrew names, no less than 102: March 1 (according to the hundredth anniversary of the Jewish calendar), the cemetery in Staten Island, in front of a grave where their bodies are piled up 22 (4 men, 18 women), a few dozen people gathered on a windy day to listen to the voice of Rabbi Shmuel Plafker sing their Hebrew names: Leah bas Leib (Lizzie Adler), Chaya bas well Eli Zion (Ida Brodsky ), Sarah bas Mordechai (Sarah Brodsky), Aidel bas Asher (Ada Brook), Masha bas Meir (Molly Gerstein), HKSAR Mirel bas Reb Moishe Leib (Mary Goldstein), Dina bas Dovid (Diana Greenberg), Perel bas Tzvi (Pauline Horowitz), Rivkah bas Yosef (Becky Kappelman)...

These days, when the class struggle is becoming increasingly fierce, as a main offensive from Pomigliano d'Arco in Madison, Wisconsin, are the faces of school teachers and civil servants in protest at the forefront of the great Wisconsin's anti-union laws to say that you can still resist.

And it's needed. One of the events commemorating the disaster of 1911 took the fiorma of a circle of women gathered to sew together, and to remember the 25 women killed as late as December a fire in Dhaka, Bangladesh, in a factory textile manufactures clothing sold from brands like Gap and JC Penney. Here is the memory, to remember not only the past, but above this.

And then, to resist and do not forget, we read and listen again ... Annie Ciminello, Cirrito Rosina, Anna Cohen, Annie Colletti, Sarah Cooper, Michelina Cordiano, Bessie Dashefsky, Josie Del Castillo, Clara Dockman, Kalman Donick, Celia Eisenberg, Dora Evans, Rebecca Feibisch, Yetta Fichtenholtz ...

L’intera Giunta comunale delivered yesterday afternoon at City Hall 11 bank books to as many new born in the year just ended. The bonus for each of them amounts to 300 €, of which 250 and 50 allocated by the calaltina branch of the Cassa di Risparmio del Veneto, whose director, the mayor said Carlo De Luca, "we send our most heartfelt gratitude" . The children came to light in 2010 were all over 17, but the evaluation of the Executive, in light of the Statute reformed in September, has been giving priority to families over the years have shown a special bond with the land, then those resident for at least 5 years. "A decision - said De Carlo - that arises from the need, at a time of limited resources, not to distribute contributions to rain making irrelevant for families, but to make choices through an objective criterion such as the connection in time with the country providing the benefit. " Among the 11 bonus, 9 are for the benefit of two Italians and foreigners. For babies and their parents were also given away some books of fairy tales and stories. occasion of the official delivery of payments to families of newborns, the mayor announced the details of the depopulation of the country in the year just ended: "Faced with 22 deaths, births were 17, 11 of which 6 Italian and foreign, with a negative balance of 5. In 2010 we also granted 63 new residences, to 72 calaltini that have moved to other municipalities. The total population was 31 December 2246 (including 176 foreigners), with a negative balance of 15 units. Just to combat the abandonment of our countries to places where services are less expensive and more user friendly, we offer
families a network of services and benefits that would alleviate the difference between the mountain 'true' and the valley floor. For our part, for example, after restoring the canteen of the nursery, we decided to still maintain the lines, which are currently among the lowest ever (62 € a month for residents, 75 for non-residents). If our administration takes care of much of the cost of right of asylum,
otherwise payable by households, it is because we are aware of the importance that the school children to working parents. Along the same lines is moving our project assisted Study Centre, we are working on since he decided to close the nursing home. CALALZO ALL’ASCOM: NO A IMPOSTA DI SOGGIORNO.

I find it much more correct to ask for a contribution to the robbery of tourists who use our territory for a few hours, leaving only waste and traffic, not only enriching but exploitation. "
"I've already contacted my hospitality and catering operators - said De Carlo - and I agree to maintain this same line. I can assure you with Ascom, to whose letter I will answer as soon as possible, that the City of Calalzo will not be given the green light to any tax, but rather, it is my firm intention to facilitate as far as possible in their activities ben comprendendo cosa significa la concorrenza sleale del Friuli e dell’Alto Adige”.

Last Posting Dates For Christmas From Perth

BONUS LIBRI DA 150 EURO PER 40 FAMIGLIE: INVESTIAMO PER TENER VIVO IL TERRITORIO CONTRO LO SPOPOLAMENTO

A bonus of € 150 for the purchase of books calaltine to all families, regardless of income Isee, who enroll their children in the fall at the lower classes of Middle and High School, where more higher the cost for the necessary tests. And 'the ultimate benefit to the City Council to allocate the support of all households (around 40), to alleviate the costs for studies of children at a time of economic difficulty. But the initiative is part of a series of projects launched to halt the depopulation of the highlands' benefit - the mayor said Carlo De Luca - a valley where life costs less and where to receive services is less complex and more economical. With the bonus books, we introduce for the first time, give practical support to 40 families, considering that the cost to be addressed is substantial, especially for first class (280 € for the first media and from 240 to 320 € for first higher), and that scarcity of resources prevents other entities to act on this same line. Some mothers I have brought this problem, and consequently we were alerted to come immediately to this need certainly felt by many families. "
Da "Il Gazzettino" ed. Belluno
