Howard Zinn, professor who also taught how to make a picket
Howard Zinn was a landmark of American radical left. A political activist, a voice that most critical of the academic institution. And, again, a member of the antiwar movement since the Vietnam War. Now that is gone in 87 years, Santa Monica, California, due to a heart attack, left his books, his essays on the innovative side of American history.

Howard Zinn lo ricordiamo soprattutto come lo storico che ha riscritto la storia americana dal punto di vista degli sconfitti, dei nativi e degli schiavi di colore. Possiamo etichettarlo come l'inventore della storiografia dal basso?

Di nuovo, è un esempio di docente che intende l'insegnamento come una missione di formazione democratica e non come fabbricazione di nuova carne da mandare al mercato del lavoro. Ha sempre avuto molto chiaro che le sue lezioni servivano a creare cittadini critici e consapevoli e non dei piccoli professorini in erba o falliti. Per farcene un'idea pensiamo che nella sua ultima lezione concluse mezz'ora prima per andare a fare un picchetto. E si portava dietro gli studenti. Il picchetto è parte della lezione. Come fai a insegnare storia del movimento operaio o storia della democrazia o storia dei diritti sociali a gente che non ha mai visto o fatto un picchetto? Un'esperienza didattica oltre che politica.
Dalla guerra del Vietnam fino al conflitto iracheno è stato sempre un mobilitatore del movimento pacifista nelle università. Incontri, conferenze, discussioni con gli studenti, manifestazioni... E riusciva ad aggregare consensi, vero?
E' stato in Vietnam con Daniel Berrigan perché il governo del Vietnam del nord lo riconobbe come interlocutore a cui consegnare dei prigionieri che stavano rilasciando. Il governo vietnamita non li consegnò al governo Usa bensì, appunto, a Zinn e Berrigan che erano esponenti del movimento per la pace. Basta pensare come lui dienta il direttore del dipartimento di storia di un'università nera, in Georgia. Important as a writer Alice Walker remembers him as the greatest teacher I ever had.
